Jannes Werner was born in October 2005 in Hassfurt, Germany. With a contract until June 2027, the young midfielder began his career at 1. FC Sand am Main, followed by 1. FC Schweinfurt until arriving at FC Carl Zeiss Jena in 2020. So far this season, he has made nine appearances and added one assist.
Werner is a player of medium-high height, and his morphology is mesomorphic. He’s physically well-built, which allows him to always be active in the game, regardless of its phase. He has good movement and running speed, as well as the ability to get ahead of his opponent in moments of high pressure. He is a strong aerial player due to his reading ability, impetus, and heading technique.
Jannes Werner usually plays as a defensive midfielder for FC Carl Zeiss Jena, but he can play anywhere in midfield due to his characteristics. Starting from the lowest point of the central inverted triangle, Werner can lead the team’s offensive organization during the first and second phases of the build-up play, dictating the paths to follow to escape rival pressure. He is a player who is comfortable playing out from the back and therefore can withstand pressure and, at the same time, find a free man with space to take the game forward – he often does so with just one touch of the ball. However, when he’s not under pressure, Werner can direct his body well to receive free of pressure and drive the team forward through the central corridor. Werner can wait for the opposition to press and then release the ball at the proper time. He’s easy to pass vertically and change the center of play, usually to find the far side of the pitch in a one-on-one situation with the opposing full-back. He is also able to link up in short spaces with his midfield partners to draw the opposition in and find gaps that then appear.
In defensive organization, it is usually to see Jannes Werner very high up on the pitch. The FC Carl Zeiss Jena midfielder accompanies the team in moments of high pressure and tends to provide good defensive cover for the men up front, making life very difficult for the opposition. In a medium block, Jannes shows quality in filling the spaces in front of the defensive line, which someone can notice in the type of trajectory that opponents usually follow to reach the opposing goal. He’s a strong containment player, intelligent in anticipation, and very aggressive regarding tackling. Also defensively, but in transition, Werner is quick to react to losing the ball, whether trying to win it back or sprinting at high speed to regain his position – he never stops running until he’s recovered defensively.
Jannes Werner is such an intelligent player on the pitch, regardless of the scenario he finds himself in. He doesn’t let a ball go to waste and has a competitive attitude that will eventually take him to the next level. Looking at his potential, I could say he has the qualities to reach at least Germany’s 2. Bundesliga. However, that will always depend on his performance, which, from what I have seen, is consistent. So it will only be a matter of time before he leaps.
